The U.S. national team striker and former Red Bulls standout revealed that he will not be going
to another Spanish club on loan, which had long been expected, and will stay with Villarreal as the

With three points in the bag after last week's 1-0 road win against Guatemala, the U.S. men's
national team heads into the next set of World Cup qualifiers knowing that two wins could all but
lock up advancement into the Hexagonal round.
The New England Revolution and Chivas USA will kick off the first round of the first annual
CONCACAF Champions League tonight with the Revs facing Trinidad & Tobago champions Joe Public while
Chivas USA is in Panama to face Panamanian champions Tauro FC.
This year marks the first playing of the CONCACAF Champions League, a tournament featuring 24
teams rather than the eight teams featured in the tournament's original version, the CONCACAF
It is that time of year again. Time to find out how players from the CONCACAF region are doing
in professional leagues across Europe. With more and more CONCACAF players heading to top leagues,
the competition in the region is only getting tougher, and it is getting even more important to
keep track of how potential U.
The forecast looked grim for the Red Bulls as they took the field against the Houston Dynamo.
The Red Bulls were set to play without three key players, midfielder Jorge Rojas (visa issues),
Jeff Parke (ankle injury) and Gabriel Cichero (red card suspension) and set to face a Dynamo team
that hasn't lost an MLS match in more than two months.
The details finally emerged on the Carlos Ruiz trade from LA to Toronto FC on Thursday and they
were shocking to say the least. The LA Galaxy shipped Ruiz to Toronto FC for a pair of supplemental
The first-place Columbus Crew. Has a nice ring to it, doesn't it? Sure, it only lasted until
Wednesday, when New England beat D.C. to move back on top of the East, but for four days the Crew
enjoyed the rarified air of first place in the brutal Eastern Conference.
The fact that Columbus beat red-hot FC Dallas to move into first made the accomplishment
even more impressive.
Good evening folks. I have finally completed the day-long journey from Guatemala to New Jersey
(well, almost completed, I'm in New York right now) and it was good to see the healthy discussions
taking place on SBI regarding the U.
The U.S. men's national team defeated Guatemala on Wednesday night, 1-0, in the opening match of
the World Cup Qualifying group stage. It wasn't pretty. In fact, it was downright ugly for the
Americans for the first 60 minutes of the match.
Hello all. I'm coming to you from Guatemala City where tonight's USA vs. Guatemala World Cup
qualifier is shaping up to be a good one. With fans here lining up since the morning to get into
the stadium for tonight's match, you can expect some of the usual craziness that goes with World
Cup qualifiers in Central American.
The Los Angeles Galaxy has traded Carlos Ruiz to Toronto FC, sources told SBI on Tuesday
evening. Details of the deal were not available yet. To make room for Ruiz on the roster, TFC has
waived French midfielder Laurent Robert.
You wouldn't know that New England has spent most of the season as the class of the league
and San Jose has spent most of the year as the worst team in the league based on their meeting on
Saturday. The revamped Earthquakes thrashed a short-handed Revs side 4-0 to serve notice that their
drive for a playoff spot isn't an exercise in futility.
Good afternoon folks. If you are at work trying to catch up on everything you were supposed
to be doing when you were watching Argentina-Brazil, don't worry. We will catch you up on some of
the other news in the soccer world.
The English Premier League is back, and not a minute too soon. After months of transfers and
coaches hirings and firings and rumors and speculation on how the new EPL season would eventually
shake out, we are finally into the season. No more wondering, the games are on and we will find out
soon enough who the real contenders and fake pretenders are.
The first group stage of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying is set to kick off on Wednesday with the
U.S. national team in Guatemala City to take on Guatemala. The Americans will be favored but can't
expect an easy game, especially considering they have never won a qualifier in Guatemala
The Los Angeles Galaxy will introduce Bruce Arena as the team's new head coach at a press
conference scheduled for 2pm ET today.
Arena and assistant coach Dave Sarachan will take over for former Galaxy head coach Ruud Gullit,
who resigned a week ago, and their first game at the Galaxy helm will be Saturday against the
Toronto FC forward Danny Dichio looked clear-headed and alert as he walked out of Giants Stadium
following TFC's 2-0 loss to the Red Bulls. The big English striker left the match after just
playing two minutes when Red Bulls defender Gabriel Cichero caught Dichio with an elbow to the
Good afternoon everybody. Toronto FC is at Giants Stadium today to take on the New York Red
Bulls in a key Eastern Conference clash. The winner today moves into playoff position while the
loser falls into the trailing pack in the rugged East.
I will be providing running commentary for today's match so be sure to stay tuned to SBI for the
latest on the action.
The English Premier League season kicks off tomorrow and the general consensus is that only
four teams have a serious chance of winning the league title. As much as Tottenham would like to
disagree, that believe is grounded in reality.
Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal are some of the world's best teams,
boasting the game's most talented players and most expensive rosters.
Good morning folks. The Olympic men's soccer quarterfinals kick off today with four quality

The English Premier League season is kicking off today and I'm sure many of you will be spending

Canadian Under-23 national team striker Will Johnson has signed with Major League Soccer and
could join his new MLS team within a week, sources confirmed to SBI on Saturday. The former
Heerenveen striker and one-time Chicago Fire player is the target of multiple MLS teams.
The Chicago Fire still holds Johnson's rights, meaning teams interested in Johnson must strike a
deal with the Fire, which retained his rights after offering him an MLS contract in 2006, which
Johnson turned down before accepting a deal with Heerenveen.
The red-hot Hoops of FC Dallas will take their five-match unbeaten streak to Crew Stadium
tonight to take on a Columbus team that has struggled in recent weeks (1-2-2 in past five).
Dallas will be looking to keep pressure on Real Salt Lake and Houston at the top of the Western
Conference standings while Columbus tries to regain second place in the East, as well as avoid
falling into the pack chasing the final playoff spots in the East.
The Chicago Fire and D.C. United rekindle one of the most heated rivalries in MLS tonight as
D.C. travels to Toyota Park to face Cuauhtemoc Blanco for the first time since his U.S. Open Cup
dust-up against D.C. last month.
The match marks the debut of newly-acquired Fire forward Brian McBride, who will make his first
appearance since leaving Fulham and signing with MLS.
Blowouts are nothing new in the Red Bulls-D.C. United rivalry. In fact, they are practically
a tradition. What isn't part of that tradition is the team from New Jersey being the one doing the
The roles were reversed on Sunday, with the Red Bulls responding to a D.
With the rumors of Bruce Arena joining the Los Angeles Galaxy growing by the day, the sight of
Arena in the Galaxy box at Home Depot Center for Thursday night's match between the Galaxy and
Chivas USA gave the talk even more life, but not nearly as much as comments made by AEG president
Tim Leiweke about Arena during the ESPN broadcast of the match.
The Los Angeles Galaxy needs money. No, not actual cash (they have sold enough David Beckham
jerseys not to need actual cash). What LA needs is allocation money and salary cap space (despite
what the Bottomless Galaxy Salary Cap jokes suggest).
The task was already going to be tough, but when U.S. Olympic defender Michael Orozco drew a red
card just four minutes into the U.S. team's crucial Olympic match against Nigeria, the job turned
into trying to swim in a shark tank with your foot cut off.
Ruud Gullit is packing his bags and Alexi Lalas is looking for work for the first time in years.
What is left in the wake of the Los Angeles Galaxy's blood-letting is a team in need of direction
and in desperate need of someone capable of cleaning up the mess.
The task is simple, but far from easy. Avoid defeat against Nigeria and the U.S. men's Olympic
team advances to the quarterfinals of the tournament. Secure a victory against Nigeria and the
Americans advance AND avoid facing Argentina in the quarters.
There may not be two teams going in more different directions than FC Dallas and Toronto FC.
More than a month ago Toronto was playing well while FC Dallas was in turmoil after the firing of
former head coach Steve Morrow.
The roles have been reversed. Now, TFC is the struggle squad, looking as bad as it did in
its 2007 expansion season.
The US men's Olympic team faced Japan in the opening match of the tournament for both teams on
Thursday. If you want to read about the game and discuss it, then go to the jump. If you are still
waiting to see the match, then feel free to return here after you have watched the match.
The Houston Dynamo lost to the New England Revolution in the SuperLiga final on Tuesday
night, but that setback didn't overshadow the fact that the defending MLS Cup champions are
rounding into form at just the right time in MLS play.
Houston's 2-0 win over a quality Columbus squad showed just how well the Dynamo is playing
as it moves toward its rightful place atop the West standings.
The 2008 SuperLiga Tournament came to a close in dramatic fashion on Tuesday night as New
England defeated the Houston Dynamo on penalty kicks. Matt Reis played the hero, stopping a pair of
shots, including the final shot by Houston's Corey Ashe to give the Revs a second trophy to go with
last year's U.
There will be a few more New York Red Bulls fans in attendance for Wednesday night's match
against FC Barcelona after the Red Bulls helped lift bans on six of 10 fans who were ejected and
banned from Giants stadium during the team's match against the Los Angeles Galaxy on July 19th.
Nine fans were ejected during the altercation pictured above, an incident that escalated after
Giants Stadium security guards entered Section 101, home of the Empire Supporter's Club, attempted
to remove a fan who was crowd-surfing.
It was easiest the biggest win in the history of the NEW San Jose Earthquakes.
When Ryan Cochrane scored the last-minute winner to give San Jose a 3-2 triumph against
hated rivals Los Angeles Galaxy, the team celebrated like it was releasing weeks and months of
frustration, which is what it did.
For those of you who missed it, Kenny Cooper kept his stock heading skyward with another
two-goal performance, this time in helping FC Dallas topple Toronto FC on Sunday. The brace upped
Cooper's tally to 13, tying him for the league lead with Landon Donovan.
The MLS Player's Union has announced that the New England Revolution and Houston Dynamo will
split the winning and second-place purses for the SuperLiga final (set for Tuesday at Gillette
Stadium) in a show of solidarity.
"The players have made this decision to show their solidarity and in protest
of the league's violation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement with respect to the negotiation of
bonuses for this tournament.
Maybe it was fitting that Ryan Cochrane, a player Alexi Lalas helped draft with the original San
Jose Earthquakes four years ago, scored San Jose's game-winning goal on Sunday. Better yet, maybe
it was more fitting to see Frank Yallop celebrate a victory over the manager he was dumped for, a
manager whose job is in jeopardy.
