Chelsea have completed the signing of Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o on a free transfer from AnzhiMakhachkala.
In 2011, Eto'o became the world's highest paid footballer with a salary of €20 million after tax per season. After the Anzhi owner decided to shrink the team's budget this summer, Eto'o was put on the transfer market.
Inevitably, David Moyes' arrival at Manchester United was greeted with echoing sighs of disappointment from some fans. Many believe this was a safe and colorless appointment, one lacking the ambition and statement of intent shown by their rivals. Zero trophies to the Scots name and a distinct lack of European experience still has the United faithful holding him at arm's length.
Samuel Eto'o is set to rekindle his relationship with Jose Mourinho as Chelsea are close to signing a £7million per year deal for the Cameroon striker.
Mourinho has managed Eto'o at Inter Milan where they won the UEFA Champions League in 2010. Eto'o is expected to have his medical on Thursday before signing a one-year contract with the Stamford Bridge club.
Before the start of this campaign there was positivity a-plenty when talk turned to Chelsea. Jose Mourinho's return and Frank Lampard's contract extension made for a delighted set of supporters, and the prospect of the two aforementioned club legends working with the heroes in the making like Juan Mata and Eden Hazard did much to heighten anticipation ahead of a brand new season.
Clearly incapable of going one solitary evening without watching soccer in some capacity, I chose to sample a League Cup tie involving one of my local sides on Tuesday night. Tranmere Rovers were playing Bolton Wanderers in the second round of the League Cup, so I decided to go along with some Tranmere-supporting mates to enjoy a midweek game.
Against all odds, Celtic mounted an amazing comeback tonight to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
After losing 2-0 in the first leg against Shakhter Karagandy, Celtic had to score two unanswered goals in order to tie up the match. And that they did. But with just minutes to go before the match was set to go to extra time, Celtic forward Anthony Stokes went on a mazy run as he dribbled through the Shakhter defenders, and then crossed the ball back into the box for James Forrest to ram the ball into the back of the net.
Not for the first time, and certainly not the last time, Goal.com has gotten its facts wrong on a story about the beautiful game. Arsenal scraped through and qualified for the play-off stages of the UEFA Champions League. The debate on gay marriage — whether it should be legal, whether it is right, whether it is normal, whether it is important — is arguably the biggest of the last year, or maybe longer. It rages on with fundamentalist groups citing the Bible to defend their stance and the progressive groups accusing the former of being stuck in another century with their archaic thinking inspired by a "silly" religious text.

Video footage has just been released of a goal that Diego Maradona considers the best of his career. The never-before-seen footage shows an incredible run by Maradona in an international friendly that ended 4-4.
Maradona considers this goal even better than the one he scored against England in the 1986 World Cup
While the quality of the video footage is remarkably poor, there's no doubting that this was an incredible goal.
In 1999, the BBC aired a documentary about the Chelsea Headhunters, a gang of football hooligans. Manchester United played Chelsea today in the biggest match of the Premier League season to date.
Jose Mourinho surprised everyone by starting his team with no recognized strikers, and fielding attacking midfielders instead as their offensive threat. Meanwhile, David Moyes had his own surprise up his sleeve as he started Wayne Rooney despite being the target of another transfer bid from Chelsea.
With the pre-match banter between David Moyes and Jose Mourinho, the match between Manchester United and Chelsea began even before the players took the pitch.
When asked about the new management at Manchester United, Jose Mourinho replied:
"For me, the difference is in the routine of meeting a friend, of being together and relaxed for the match, [I] have the guarantee that after the match, independent of the result, we are together again, enjoying our time and having a laugh.
Arsenal's Emirates Stadium opened in July, 2006 for Dennis Bergkamp's testimonial match against Ajax. But the story behind how the stadium was built, within viewing distance of Highbury Stadium, is a fascinating one that many soccer fans, even Arsenal supporters, may not know.

In March 2013, British television channel ITV aired a documentary entitled "The Laurie Cunningham Story" about one of the pioneers of English football.
He was the first black soccer player ever to be capped by England, which opened the door for other black professional footballers to gain international experience for their country (including Viv Anderson who became the first black athlete to play for the England national team, as well as Paul Ince who became England's first black captain in 1993).
In section one we evaluate Arsenal and their derby-day win against Fulham. Have reports of the Gunners demise been grossly exaggerated? Meanwhile Cardiff City Dragons announced themselves in the top league with a hard fought victory over Manchester City.
It's funny how many of those constantly calling on Arsene Wenger to "SPEND SPEND SPEND" previously criticized Wenger for bringing too many foreign players into the Premier League. Right now, no other top six side in England is so reliant on British players — particularly young British players — than Arsenal.
David Moyes was perhaps overstepping his bounds when he challenged the Premier League over Manchester United's difficult opening fixture schedule, but he can't be faulted for being too upset. A quick look at United's first few matches shows that they'll be facing some of their toughest challenges straight out of the gate.
Manchester City's defensive frailties were exposed today after Pablo Zabaleta was guilty of poor marking for all three of Cardiff City's goals in a shock defeat for the Premier League title chasers.

Chelsea have officially confirmed that they've agreed personal terms with Brazilian midfielder Willian, and that the deal is done. All that remains is for Willian to be granted a work permit. A hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
The Stamford Bridge club stole Willian away from Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday after the Anzhi footballer had agreed personal terms and completed a medical.
Today's two Premier League matches feature battles between teams from England and Wales. Not that either club features a ton of English and Welsh players on their team, but don't tell the football supporters who are going to the match that!
In the English corner, we have Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur going up against, respectively, Cardiff City and Swansea City.
Tottenham Hotspur are turning their attention to try to sign Italy and Roma left back Federico Balzaretti, according to a report in The Sunday Times newspaper today.

Villas-Boas is interested in reuniting with Hulk. The Portuguese boss managed Hulk when they were both at Porto.
It's been a sorry start to the season for Carlisle United both on the pitch and in the stands. After three years of steady progress up the League One table, the club are struggling to dust themselves off from the tumble that left them lodged in a disappointing seventeenth last term.
There is cause for concern on the terraces too with the Cumbrians hemorrhagingfans almost as readily as they are shipping goals.
Who said Italian soccer was boring? After returning to Serie A for the first time in 11 years, Hellas Verona defeated AC Milan 2-1 in the opening match of the 2013/14 Serie A season.
The match had everything — Thirty-six-year-old striker Luca Toni scored two goals on his Verona league debut, fans rioted with seats being thrown by both sets of supporters, and Italian TV commentatorTiziano Crudeli went mental on-air as Verona scored a shock win.
West Ham United have unveiled their new third shirt for the 2013-14 season.
While I loved West Ham's home shirt, this new West Ham United third shirt seems like a waste of an effort. I like that the Hammers colors of claret and blue and included on the side of the shirt, but the rest of the shirt features an unimaginative design and is yet another me-too black shirt.
The 2013/14 season of Serie A kicked off earlier today featuring Verona against AC Milan. The next match on deck is Sampdoria versus Juventus, which will be shown live on television — for viewers in the United States — on beIN SPORT beginning at 2:30pm ET.

In English football, the Director of Football role remains a mystery to the average Premier League follower. Whilst some fulfill ambassadorial duties, the majority are there to cite transfer targets, facilitate deals and provide a go-between for the manager and board.
In the Premier League,it is a role that comes with something of a negative stigma.
Sunderland have made an offer of £6million for AS Roma and US international midfielder Michael Bradley, according to a reportin Italy. It seemed as though the Gareth Bale transfer saga was finally coming to a close as Real Madrid were close to unveiling the Welsh winger as their latest addition.

Believe it not or believe it maybe, but Metronewspaper is reporting tonight that Arsenal are set to make a £40million bid for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema.
The newspaper doesn't attempt to include any source or attribution to the transfer rumor, and the likelihood of Benzema signing with Arsenal seems a long shot when the Gunners have much worse problems to resolve — namely finding a defensive midfielder and adding depth to their defense.

Following the departure of David Beckham at the close of last season's successful MLS Cup run-in, speculation was rife in the U.S. soccer world about who would take the former England captain's place at the LA Galaxy. Beckham, along with U.S. international Landon Donovan and all-time leading Irish national team goal-scorer Robbie Keane, occupied one of the Galaxy's coveted designated player, or "DP" slots.
Arsenal faced a true test of its character tonight with a match against Fenerbahce in Istanbul, in front of a physical team and an intimidating atmosphere.

It's very likely that Southampton supporters are walking around this week with broad grins on their faces after an extremely promising weekend with the record signing of £15million striker Pablo Osvaldo following hot on the heels of an opening day away win over West Bromwich Albion. The Italian international was confirmed as having agreed a 4 year contract on Sunday evening and was introduced to the media on Monday afternoon.
The famous adage that "football is a funny old game" is very true. Not many would have predicted that Aston Villa would get a 3-1 win over Arsenal at the weekend or believed that Wigan would beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final last year. However, more often than not, with careful analysis and an insightful approach, you can make informed decisions when pursuing betting tips around the beautiful game.

FOX Sports launched their new daily TV show earlier this week on FOX Sports 1. While the reviews for FOX Soccer Daily have been disappointing, one aspect of their show that has been overlooked so far has been something they slipped in to the intro.

The Brazilian is fairly unknown to the Premier League, but the player has high expectations following the reported £30million transfer fee.
Chelsea's attacking midfielder Eden Hazard is the player to watch this season. The magical Belgian burst onto the scene last year with Chelsea starting like a house on fire. His form dipped slightly midway through the year, but Hazard picked right back up and started to dazzle again.
This campaign, Hazard means business and had a pre-season that opened many people's eyes.
Arsenal will be hopeful that last season's hard work doesn't go to waste as they take on Fenerbahce at Sukru Saracoglu Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey today at 2:45pm ET (for viewers in the United States, the match will be shown live on FOX Sports 1 and FOXSoccer2Go). Arsene Wenger has called for a big performance in the UEFA Champions League play-off game as he aims to take pressure off the club and its players due to a disappointing start this past weekend.
Most of the viewers tuning in to the Crystal Palace against Tottenham Hotspur match on Sunday will have seen Palace's new home shirt for the first time. The one thing that was striking to me was that there were no shirt manufacturer logos visible on the shirt — at least not within TV viewing distance.
Everton are eager to sign Gareth Barry from Manchester City, but the Merseyside club have been unable to agree personal terms. The 32-year-old midfielder is on wages of £100,000 per week at City, and both Everton and Manchester City are now stalled to figure out how they can fund his wage demands.
The Arsenal team may not have gotten a lot of sleep last night after Fenerbahce supporters set off flares and firecrackers outside their hotel in Istanbul on the eve of the first leg of their UEFA Champions League play-off match.

If at first you fail to succeed, try, try again. That's the motto of Chelsea in their pursuit of Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney. The Blues are set to test United once again, this time with a third bid for the wantaway Liverpudlian.
This is likely to be the last bid by Chelsea for Rooney since the transfer window will close soon, on September 2.
Kartik Krishnaiyer recently sat down with Luton Town and Tampa Bay Rowdies legend Ricky Hill for the debut episode of the new weekly World Soccer Talk interview show,Voices of Soccer.

If Newcastle United supporters were hoping the return of the Premier League might help dispel memories of a turbulent summer, they were sadly mistaken. In the final game of the opening round of league fixtures, the Magpies were hammered 4-0 by a rampant Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. In truth, but for Tim Krul and some wasteful finishing from the Citizens, it would have been a much, much higher scoreline.
Barcelona put seven past Levante, while Real Madrid recovered from a shaky start to beat Real Betis as the 2013/14 Primera Liga season got underway in Spain this past weekend. Villarreal celebrated their return to the top flight with a win, while Atletico Madrid also started with an impressive victory.

Gary Neville is back for another season of Premier League football, and he returns to his regular role on Sky's Monday Night Football program where he continues to dive deep into analyzing tactics. He's joined this season by former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher.
Neville continues to set the standard for the best soccer analysis on television.
In the last two weeks, we've seen two new daily soccer news programs launch on American television — FOX Soccer Daily and ESPN FC.
The addition of these two new shows meant that we bid adieu to their predecessors.FOX Soccer Daily debuted today on FOX Sports 1, replacing FOX Soccer News, the Toronto-based program that was produced in partnership with Rogers.
Brazilian left winger Willian has arrived in London today, and is expected to complete a medical before signing for Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth around £30million, according to a report inThe Daily Mail.
Last week, Liverpool were poised to make a £30million offer for Willian, but Tottenham Hotspur have leapfrogged the Reds in the pursuit of the highly-rated AnzhiMakhachkala attacking midfielder.
Manchester City's new Manuel Pellegrini era began with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Newcastle United tonight. The Blues created chance after chance throughout the match, which is nothing new for City against the Magpies. Newcastle has fared worse against City for the last several years than any other current Premier League side so it unwise to read too much into this result.
Fulham have signed Tottenham Hotspur and England midfielder Scott Parker on a three-year deal. The transfer fee is reportedly £2million.
Last week, Queens Park Rangers had agreed a deal with Tottenham Hotspur to sign Parker, but the player had to decide whether he wanted to take a step down to the Championship to play with Harry Redknapp's side.
An encouraging start to the season under their new manager was promptly shifted to the back of Evertonian minds on Monday morning. That was following the news that the Toffees had turned down a £28 million bid from Manchester United for Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines a mere day before the start of the Premier League campaign.
Manchester City hosts Newcastle United in today's first Monday match of the 2013/14 Premier League season.
With Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham already getting off to a flying start, Manchester City will want to get all three points in Manuel Pellegrini's first Premier League match in charge of the Citizens.
Here in the United States, NBC's Premier League debut was amazing even to the point of engaging non-soccer fans and non-Premier League supporters. The studio shows hosted by Rebecca Lowe were informative and engaging. The only complaint I have was with the large number of commercials in the 7am-7:45am ETPremier League Livetimeslot leading into the Liverpool-Stoke City match.
Out of favor Sunderland defender Phil Bardsley has gotten himself into more hot water after joking about his club's defeat at home against Fulham on the opening day of the season.
Bardsley, who infamously passed out on the floor of a local casino as his friends scattered £50 notes all over him just days before his final game of the 2012-13 season, hit out on Instagram against his club this past weekend, by posting a comment (using his Instagram account Bardoman26) that read:
The league returns this weekend but the pod try to dissect what that actually means for a lot of sides. As the transfer window is still open and the potential of so many sides is still to be decided (by who?) we take a look through the opening performances of the weekend and try to decipher what some managers were thinking.
Arsenal have made a bid for Newcastle United midfielder Yohan Cabaye, according to the British media today.
The 27-year-old midfielder has consistently been one of the bright sparks at St James' Park after joining the club in 2011 from Lille. Already this summer there have been transfer rumors linking Cabaye to Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United, so the fact that another club is interested in the footballer isn't surprising.
Southampton have signed AS Roma and Italy striker Pablo Osvaldo on a £12.8million deal with the fee rising to £14.5million with add-ons. The prolific striker will be unveiled at St Mary's tomorrow after signing a four year contract. The Saints have announced that the player should be ready to play against Sunderland this Saturday.
NBC Sports has announced that its telecast of the match between Swansea City and Manchester United on Saturday August 17 has posted the highest overnight rating in the United States history for a Premier League opener.

Roberto Soldado's penalty for Tottenham Hotspur today was enough to give Spurs three points to open the season away at newly promoted Crystal Palace. But the game was not as close as the scoreline would suggest. With every summer signing getting a debut, Andre Villas-Boas gave an indication of how Spurs are going to play this season.
After yesterday's opening matches in La Liga, Spanish football fans have a treat in store today with three back-to-back matches featuring Barcelona against Levante, Real Madrid versus Real Betis and, last but not least, Sevilla vs Atletico Madrid.
For viewers in the United States, all three matches are live on beIN SPORT.
Cardiff City striker Andreas Cornelius, who was injured and unable to play in the Welsh club's opening game yesterday, stood with the Cardiff supporters in the away section of West Ham United's Boleyn Ground.
The £7.5million signing decided to watch the game among the Cardiff supporters.
The Danish striker is expected to be fit for Cardiff City's next match, which is against Manchester City.
Croatian attacking midfielderAlen Halilović has agreed personal terms on a £12.8million move to Tottenham from Dinamo Zagreb, according to Croatian websiteJutarnji List.
The Croatian website reports that 17-year-old Halilović agreed personal terms with Tottenham on Friday night. The website adds that if and when the "new Luka Modric" is signed, he'll immediately return to Dinamo Zagreb on loan until he's 18.
With the launch of the new Premier League season on NBC Sports, I had the opportunity today to give the NBC Sports Live Extra app a test drive both at home and on the road.
After remembering how bad the NBC Olympics coverage was on mobile devices, I had some trepidation. However, I was hopeful that the NBC Sports Live Extra app for iOS devices would be an improvement for the Premier League soccer games.
Fulham revealed their third shirt for the 2013-14 Premier League season today in their away match against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
Designed by adidas, Fulham's third shirt is navy blue with orange and white trim. Personally, the shirt reminds me of a cross between recent Stoke City away shirts and Sunderland's away shirt for the 2012-13 season, which had a different trim (cyan instead of orange).
Is this Portugal's new home shirt for the FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil?
The photograph below reveals a modern shirt designed by Puma and featuring the famous red colors that Portugal wear. The jersey features a green trim on the shoulders and neck, with a v-neck collar and unique horizontal stripe pattern on the front and back of the shirt.
The debut episode of NBC'sMatch Of The Daypremieres tonight on NBC Sports Network at 11pm ET.
NBC's version of the show with the same name as the iconic 50-year British highlights show is completely separate from the BBC version. NBC's version of Match Of The Day (or MOTD as the Brits call it) will be hosted by Rebecca Lowe and features analysts Robbie Mustoe and Robbie Earle.
The second day of the 2013/14 Premier League season kicks off today with a double-header. For viewers in the United States, NBC'sPremier League Liveprogram begins at 8am ET, which leads into the first match of the day (8:30am ET on NBC Sports Network) between Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur in a London derby.
Moments after Arsenal lost 3-1 at home against Aston Villa on the opening day of the season yesterday, an Arsenal supporter was interviewed and asked whether or not the match — the first home loss on opening day for Arsenal in two decades — could have gotten any worse.
The hardcore Arsenal supporter didn't hold back — criticizing Arsene Wenger, Ivan Gazidis, the Arsenal board and even the Arsenal Supporters' Trust.
We had 18 goals today in the Premier League for an average of 2.5 goals scored per match. The Saturday edition of Gameweek 1 featured the first Premier League match for David Moyes as the boss of Manchester United. Plus we saw Nicolas Anelka make his debut for West Bromwich Albion, the first Premier League match for Cardiff City and much more.
"Get your breakfast. Get your lunch, and get comfy," Rebecca Lowe told viewers at the beginning of NBC's opening day of coverage of the Barclays Premier League 2013/14 season.
For the next 7.5 hours, presenter Lowe alongside analysts Robbie Mustoe and Robbie Earle led us through a flawless presentation of Premier League Live, the new NBC pre-match show followed by Liverpool-Stoke, Arsenal-Aston Villa and Swansea-Manchester United, with plenty of pre-match, half-time and post-match analysis and interviews to keep soccer fans glued to their TV sets.
This summer so far, Premier League clubs have signed even fewer English footballers than usual from the Championship. Incredibly, there have been only five signings from the Championship in this window despite the fact that the 24 teams of the Championship have English talent that are capable of making the step up to the top flight.
Well, this was a pleasant surprise. For the first time in my 36 years of covering English football, I came across a listing of who the commentators will be for this weekend's round of top flight soccer.
Never before, as far as I know, has a list like this been made available ahead of the Premier League games — at least not publicly.
For our Premier League brethren to the north in Canada, here's the Premier League TV schedule for the first two weeks of the season (all times Eastern):
Saturday, August 17

Liverpool opens the 2013-14 Premier League season – and Brendan Rodgers' second season in charge – on Saturday when they host Stoke City.
After finishing in seventh place last season, the Reds are going on their fourth consecutive season without Champions League football, something that once seemed unfathomable for a club that is synonymous with European football.
I can already hear the protests about La Liga. It's just like the Scottish Premier League on steroids. All the best players outside of Real Madrid and Barcelona are leaving the country because of the massive debts that clubs are carrying. They don't bother defending over in Spain and players go down under a light wind.
Other than ESPN's wonderful opening segments on Saturday mornings that had Ian Darke and Steve McManaman at the grounds of English football stadiums around England plus the always informative half-time chats between Paul Dempsey and Pat Dolan on Setanta, this weekend will be the first time ever in Premier League US soccer history where we have pre-match, half time, post-match and shoulder programming that are actually worth watching.
As the news about Mikel Arteta's injury filters through the Arsenal ranks, the hope and excitement that awaited the new season among Arsenal supporters is slowly turning into fear and anger before a ball has even been kicked. Arsenal start their campaign in a tricky game against last season's survivalists Aston Villa, who managed to keep hold of their most prized asset Christian Benteke.
As if you needed any more reasons to get excited about the new Premier League season, here's another one. It's a brilliant promo for the 2013/14 season that combines iconic British images with video of supporters of Premier League clubs and more.
If you love the Premier League, turn up your volume, click the full-screen icon in the bottom right corner, lean back and take it all in.
A substantial number of Comcast Xfinity customers will have access to Premier League Extra Time this weekend for the launch of the 2013/14 season. However, despite NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) being owned by NBC Universal, which is a subsidiary of Comcast Corporation, not all Comcast markets will have the overflow channels available for opening weekend.
After what has been an excruciating summer for avid football supporters, with no World Cup and no European Championships to whet the appetite, the Premier League will be back in earnest this weekend. With all the off-season talk based on managerial changes and transfer sagas, the focus falling back to on-pitch matters will be most welcome.
Earlier this week, we wrote about a brand-new fantasy soccer game called Euro Fantasy League.
The concept of the game is quite appealing —you get to select a squad from the top five leagues in Europe, so you can assemble a dream team of players from La Liga, Premier League, Serie A, Ligue Un and the Bundesliga.
NBC Sports has released a new tool to help fans of Premier League clubs in the United States find what channel numbers the matches will be on.
With a sea of different TV providers across the United States showing Premier League matches and many of them offering Premier League Extra Time, the tool simplifies the process of determining which matches will be shown on what channel numbers and at what time.
The 2013/14 season of La Liga kicks off this weekend. Champions Barcelona once again prepare to start the campaign with a new coach. Argentine Gerardo Martino took over at Camp Nou in less than ideal circumstances after Tito Vilanova was forced to step down to continue his battle with cancer and will need to instill continuity in the face of continued high expectations.
Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has resumed first team training with the Anfield club and has reportedly apologized to his teammates, according toThe Guardiannewspaper.
Last week Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers had ordered Suarez to train on his own. But after reports this week revealed that Suarez had told his Uruguayan teammates that he planned on staying at Liverpool because of the support of the Liverpool supporters, today's move is a positive step forward for the controversial footballer who tried to force his way out of the club this summer.
The quality of this summer's new soccer shirt designs has been a mixture of some good, some bad but some ugly. However, we've combed through the better ones to come up with a list of the ten best dressed teams that will be hitting the pitch this season. Whether or not that'll translate to wins remains to be seen.
Fulham have agreed a deal with Aston Villa to sign striker Darren Bent on a season-long loan.
Fulham Manager Martin Jol said: "Darren Bent is a striker I have always admired. He has shown in the Barclays Premier League that he is composed and clinical in front of goal but, even if he is not scoring, he is involved in some good link-up play, creating opportunities for his teammates.
Queens Park Rangers have agreed a deal with Tottenham Hotspur to sign midfielder Scott Parker according to Harry Redknapp. The England national team midfielder now has to decide whether he wants to move to QPR and, if so, to agree personal terms.
Redknapp said today:
"We agreed terms with Tottenham, so it is up to Scott now what he does and to make his mind up whether he wants to come or not.
Galatasaray strikerJohan Elmander says he's on his way to join Norwich City in the next challenge of his footballing career.
The 32-year-old Swedish striker, who played for Bolton, Toulouse, Feyenoord and several other clubs, is a tall, physical and clinical finisher in front of goal. He's earned 71 caps for Sweden and has scored 19 goals for his national team.
Liverpool have agreed a deal with Valencia to sign French left-back Aly Cissokho on a season-long loan. However, the defender won't be available for tomorrow's game against Stoke City, and will be arriving on Merseyside next week.
For several weeks, the British press have been reporting that Brendan Rodgers had been keen on signing Cissokho.
If you plan on watching the Premier League via the Internet in the US this season, take a few minutes to equip yourself with all the tools you need to watch the games.
For residents of the United States, all 380 matches of each Premier League season through May 2016 will be available via live streaming free of charge as long as you have a TV subscription to NBCSN (NBC Sports Network) and your TV provider has an agreement in place to offer the service to you via an authenticated login.
Mexico's decisive 4-1 victory over Ivory Coast in New Jersey on Wednesday night could mark a turning point for El Tri after a troubled seven months this calendar year. The Mexican National Team is not new to prolonged slumps in World Cup qualifying. In 2009, under Sven-Goran Eriksson, El Tri took three points from its first three matches and were decisively beaten by Honduras and the United States.
It's not the news that Arsenal supporters wanted to hear on the eve of a new Premier League season. After having a scan on his thigh today, Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta is expected to be out of the squad for 4 to 6 weeks with a tornquadricep. That means Arteta will miss the UEFA Champions League playoff matches against Fenerbahce as well as the opening weeks of the 2013/14 Premier League season.
PES 2014 will feature a new, unique heart motion effect, which will keep track of a player's motivation during a match that can play a decisive role in how well or not the footballer performs to your command.
The concept is pretty simple. If a player does well in a match, his motivation and confidence receives a boost, which will make him more likely to execute tough moves such as a bending free kick, etcetera.
Every season, for the past six years, I've asked you — the reader — to post your predictions of how you think the 20 teams will rank in the Premier League. The challenge every summer is that your predictions need to be posted before the season begins, which means it's well before the transfer window closes.
We're just literally hours away from the start of the 2013/14 Premier League season and the anticipation has reached its pinnacle. But before everything kicks off, before our weekends become significantly busier, let's pause for a moment and revel in what we're about to experience.
The 2013 summer hasn't been without its share of entertaining football.
Editor's note:Today's Fantasy Premier League feature marks the debut of a brand-new weekly feature on World Soccer Talk — Fantasy Premier League Strategist — written by FPL expert Steve Rothgeb where he offers several inside tips to help you increase your FPL point score each week.
For the 2013-14 season of the Premier League on NBC Sports, every single match will be made available live on television and the Internet via a combination of NBC Sports Network (NBCSN), NBC, Premier League Extra Time,NBC Sports Live Extra app and other NBC networks. After coming on as a substitute on his debut appearance for the England national team, Southampton striker Rickie Lambert scored a brilliant header with his first touch of the ball to defeat Scotland 3-2 at Wembley Stadium today.
It was classic Roy of the Rovers material from Lambert.
Many soccer fans in the United States are still puzzled whether or not they'll be able to access Premier League Extra Time, the overflow channel service where select TV providers will broadcast the games that are not being shown live on NBC or NBC Sports Network.
The reason for the puzzlement is because DirecTV, Bright House Networks, Cablevision's Optimum and AT&T Uverse are the TV providers who have revealed where their Premier League Extra Time channels will reside.
During half-time of Wednesday's game between England and Scotland on FOX Soccer, FOX Sports announced some of the UEFA Champions League games its networks will televise next week, which gives us the first indication of how the post-FOX Soccer demise and launch of FOX Sports 1 and FOX Sports 2 will impact our TV viewing experience.
NBC Sports have revealed photographs of their Premier League set that they'll be using to broadcast the league when the action kicks off on Saturday, August 17 — beginning at 7am ET on NBC Sports Network (see TV guide here).
As you can see from the images above and below, the set looks fantastic.
So after all the tactical experimentation, the promising pre-season showings and the astute transfer dealings, Roberto Martinez is on the brink of his first Premier League match in his capacity as Everton manager. Carrow Road will be the venue for his opening Premier League game, as the Toffees start their season as far away from home as is possible in this division, with a trip to Norwich City.
Wayne Rooney and Theo Walcott are set to start for England today in the nation's "friendly" against Scotland that's being played at Wembley Stadium in London. For viewers in the United States, the broadcast of the match begins at 2:45pm ET on FOX Soccer.

There will moments of absolute madness, redemption and compelling story lines among the most entertaining football on this planet. Over the course of the campaign, the top 20 teams of England's Premier League elite will battle it out for the title.
Sky Sports News reporter Nick Collins fell down during a live broadcast outside Wembley Stadium today.
Collins was reporting about Michael Carrick pulling out of the squad, when he suddenly lost his balance and fell down with a loud smash. Sky Sports News quickly returned to Jim White in the studio where they carried on to the next story.
In conjunction with NBC Sports Network launching its Premier League coverage beginning the weekend of August 17, the network is transitioning its name to NBCSN.
According to NBC Sports, "Starting with the Liverpool-Stoke City match — coverage begins at 7 a.m. ET on Saturday — NBC Sports Network will increasingly be referred to by commentators and within on-screen graphics as NBCSN.
While NBC Sports debuts its Premier League coverage this Saturday, FOX Sports 1 launches on the same day with a schedule of NASCAR and UFC. However, unless any last minute deals can be finalized, the much hyped network won't be carried by DirecTV, DISH Network, Time Warner Cable or Bright House Networks on opening day.
Hull City have agreed a deal with Tottenham Hotspur to sign midfielder Tom Huddlestone, according to Sky sources.
Neither Tottenham nor Hull City have confirmed the news yet, but it appears likely that the 26-year-old will be playing in the amber and black of Hull City next season after a deal that'll net Tottenham approximately £5million.
Message to Aston Villa supporters: Former club captain Stiliyan Petrov says that he doesn't want Villa fans to continue with the 19th minute tribute to him at Villa Park:
"Fans have asked me about it and I want to make clear that it was a great thing from the Villa fans, an unbelievable gesture which meant so much to me and my family through some of the toughest periods we had to endure.
Liverpool are poised to make a £30million bid for Brazilian midfielder Willian, the 25-year-old footballer who plays forAnzhi Makhachkala. The Russian Premier League team are facing a financial crisis and have put their entire squad up for sale with Samuel Eto'o hotly tipped to be heading to Chelsea.
Luis Suarez looks likely to stay at Liverpool Football Club due to the support he's received from Liverpool supporters who helped influenced his decision, according to reports coming out of the Uruguay national team camp.
The Uruguayan striker is in Asia this week, playing for his country in an international friendly against Japan (where he scored a goal against the Asian superpower).
Last month, I questioned Pep Guardiola's decision to sign Thiago and mentioned all the potential pitfalls that were to come with it. Eventually, after a couple of weeks, it seems as though the inevitable has happened. An experienced Bundesliga and Champions League winner in Luiz Gustavo looks set to be chopped from the squad in order to make more room for Thiago, an unproven Spanish youth player who has no experience whatsoever in the Bundesliga or UEFA Champions League.
First, we had videos. Then subway cars, which was then followed by viral videos and street posters. Now the latest phase of NBC's advertising campaign to increase awareness of the network's launch of the Premier League on US television on August 17 features their ads on taxis that are driving through the streets of New York City.
Real Madrid's hunt to sign Gareth Bale from Tottenham Hotspur has gone cold, after there have been some reports inThe Daily Telegraphthat Carlo Ancelotti is less interested in signing the player, and may have moved on to focus on other acquisitions instead.
The article in question (linked below) doesn't include any matter-of-fact evidence, but the hints clearly point that Real Madrid may be less interested.
With so many fantasy football games to choose from, it's easy to get lost in the sea of choices. But with the brand-new game called Euro Fantasy League, this fantasy game offers a major difference — you can select players from up to five of the top European leagues (Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue Un), all in the same team.
Crystal Palace have signed Arsenal striker Marouane Chamakh on a one-year deal.
While Chamakh has been the butt of jokes for a couple of years since joining Arsenal in 2010, this will be a wonderful opportunity at Crystal Palace to prove the doubters wrong in a team where he should have a regular starting spot if his performances are positive.
On May 16 2003, Hull City's manager at the time Peter Taylor signed a left-back for the club who had just been released by Division Two side Scunthorpe United. Ten years later, that player — Andy Dawson — has just played his last ever game for The Tigers in a 3-0 win over Real Betis.
Liverpool winger Stewart Downing has joined West Ham United on a four-year deal. The transfer fee is reportedly around £6million, which represents at £14million loss for Liverpool, who signed the player for £20million in 2011 from Aston Villa.
Downing will join up with former Liverpool teammate Andy Carroll.
Despite all of the changes in English football this summer with Jose Mourinho returning, goal-line technology debuting and Sir Alex Ferguson retiring, some things never change. Arsenal are still finding it hard to make any significant signings. Chelsea and Manchester City have spent over £100million between them while Arsene Wenger still believes his side can challenge for the title with or without new signings.
Jurgen Klopp's Borussia Dortmund side will keep the Bundesliga race tight this season. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, a player I had hoped several Premier League sides would pursue instead, ended up with the European runners-up as somewhat of an afterthought. On Saturday in his Bundesliga debut he recorded a hat trick, made runs from a wide position, and linked up well with Marco Reus, İlkay Gündoğan and Nuri Şahin.
Since 2007, Arsenal have spent only 1% of their available cash flow in the transfer market according to an astonishing report by The Swiss Ramble today.
The soccer financial blog goes into exhaustive detail regarding Arsenal's impressive financial fair play status, but also reminds readers what Arsenal Chief Executive Ivan Gazidis boasted at the beginning of this summer:
"This year we are beginning to see something we have been planning for some time, which is the escalation in our financial firepower.
Sunderland have completed the signing of Trabzonspor's Czech defender Ondrej Celustka on a season-long loan deal.
Celustka is Sunderland's tenth signing of the summer. The 24-year-old played for Slavia Prague in 2009 where he made 41 league appearances and scored three goals. According to the Sunderland club website, Celustka linked up with Trabzonspor — following a short spell on loan at Palermo — where he made55 league appearances for the Turkish Super Lig club.
Other than Arsenal, West Bromwich Albion have been the quietest Premier League club in the summer transfer window, but that's all about to change as Steve Clarke's side are set to finalize a deal to sign Udinese striker Matej Vydra on a loan deal in the next 24 hours, according toThe Daily Mail.
Tonight's transfer speculation in the media is a perfect example of why it's called the silly season. For the past 10 days, there's been plenty of talk about Bayern Munich's Luiz Gustavo being interested in moving to the Premier League, with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger expressing an interest. However, there's nothing concrete there, butThe Guardianfinally ran a story about it.
So much for Wayne Rooney's mysterious shoulder injury that he supposedly picked up eight days ago in a closed-door friendly against Real Betis, the same injury that ruled Rooney out of friendlies against AIK and Sevilla as well as the FA Community Shield yesterday against Wigan Athletic.
Now, miraculously, Rooney returned to training today with England, where he started training 30 minutes early to prepare for this Wednesday's friendly against Scotland.
Manchester United lifted the Community Shield trophy on Sunday at Wembley after a comfortable 2-0 win against Wigan Athletic. However, it could have been so different if Wigan was able to bury their two golden chances to score to pull the Latics back into the match.
If you missed any of the highlights, or if you want to see them again, here they are in addition to interviews and other great footage:

Newcastle United played Braga yesterday at St James' Park in a rather uneventful 1-1 preseason draw, but one of the talking points coming out of the match was Newcastle United's choice of strip. They wore a new fourth strip, which their club describes as a "new members home kit."
The capture of Hill 937 during the Vietnam War was made famous in the movie Hamburger Hill. Hollywood glorified the struggle of American forces as they spent 10 days laying siege to a heavily fortified hill of dubious strategic value. Like the assault on Hill 937, Major League Soccer faces an uphill battle to capture the hearts and minds of the American people.
As Manchester City summed up their season by losing to Norwich on the final day of the 2012-13 Premier League, fans around the Etihad continued to display banners and sing songs to their recently departed manager Roberto Mancini. It was hardly surprising that they did so. With City having previously gone 35 years without silverware, Mancini walked into the manager's office at the City of Manchester Stadium and procured not only the 2011 F.
Today's FA Community Shield game between Manchester United and Wigan Athletic (8:40am ET on FOX Soccer) will be memorable for several reasons.
One, for many of us, it'll be FOX Soccer's swan song in a meaningful English match before FOX pulls the plug on the channel in early September. Yes, FOX Soccer will be showing the England-Scotland friendly next week as well as a UEFA Champions League play-off match the following week, but today's match will be the last major English club match the network will show since FOX Sports World began showing English soccer in 1998.
Chelsea and Inter Milan faced off in downtown Indianapolis earlier this month. The quarterfinal of the International Champions Cup was a massive event that drew 42,000 fans to Lucas Oil Stadium, and filled the streets of Indianapolis. But there was something more important happening that day, something more subtle.
Newcastle United and LA Galaxy have been offered a cut-price deal to sign striker Samuel Eto'o from Russian Premier League sideFC Anzhi Makhachkala. The Dagestan-based team have gone bankrupt and have transfer listed their entire team.
Eto'o, who joined Anzhi in 2011 from Inter Milan, is the world's highest paid footballer.
After Hull City announced yesterday that they're changing their club name from Hull City AFC (in the UK) and Hull City Tigers (internationally), the Premier League has revealed toThe Daily Mailthat the new club name won't be endorsed for the upcoming season.
A Premier League spokesperson said:
"We have not been informed of a change in the name of the actual club, it is the company name that has changed.
The advertising campaign by NBC Sports to promote it's Premier League coverage continues to win plaudits with videos, billboards in Times Square and subway cars. And now, NBC has taken to the streets of New York City with a street poster that shows many of the NYC boroughs and neighborhoods matched up with Premier League teams.

Following Chelsea's 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid on Wednesday night in Miami, the majority of the focus of Jose's Mourinho's post match press conference was on his former life as Real Madrid boss. Given the context of this match, it was not surprising considering that Real Madrid was egged on by a partisan crowd in Miami whose bitter booing and hissing when Mourinho and John Terry were introduced pre-game reminded many why Real Madrid is so hated by many across the European continent.
