No doubt about it, Wednesday's fourth-round match for FC Dallas in the 2013 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup not only has meaning because it's against in-state rival Houston, but this match also takes on additional meaning because it is in a tournament bearing the former FCD owner's name of Lamar Hunt.
Well, this reporter recently caught up with four people who knew Mr.
We talked about coming out here and how this is a great opportunity for the Strikers to show their measuring stick against MLS players and an MLS team. Right now we're in the fortunate position to be first in MLS so it's a great opportunity and it's also an opportunity to be seen by an MLS coach.
Oh boy. Last night was a fun one in the 2013 US Open Cup. More MLS struggles and more questions as to how serious some teams are taking this tournament.
Let's get down to the upsets first. We nearly had three of them.
The Upsets
Orlando City SC 1, Sporting KC 0
Orlando City SC pulled off one of the biggest upsets in this tournament's history last night when they went to Kansas City and knocked off the defending Cup champions Sporting KC 1-0.
The 2013 US Open Cup could get more interesting as the rounds go. Today, the USSF released the potential quarterfinal pairings for the tournament.
Some tough pairings for some clubs like Portland or New York. Defending champions Sporting KC have to hit the road regardless if they beat Orlando next week.

Take one look at the pairings from the last two nights in the 2013 edition of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. One thing you'll notice right away was the four MLS sides from the Western Conference who had to travel to the east coast for their third round matches.

After this week's results, 12 MLS sides move through to the fourth round on June 12. Only four lower division teams left but the biggest one missing from MLS has to be three-time champions Seattle.
Those are probably some of the best words to describe the mood of Sporting KC fans after tonight's 1-0 loss to Orlando City that knocks Sporting Kansas City out of the US Open Cup. A second minute goal from Long Tan was all that Orlando City needed to take down the defending US Open Cup champs as Sporting KC looked again to lack creativity in the final third.
It's been a week and a half since Sporting KC last took the field against the Montreal Impact at Sporting Park. That's a week and a half that they've had to stew over the 2-1 loss to the Impact that gave them their third home loss of the season in only their 8th home game. Now they get to take on their USL affiliate club, Orlando City in the US Open Cup.
US Soccer today announced the potential quarterfinal pairings of this year's US Open Cup. Should Sporting KC beat their USL affiliate, Orlando City, Sporting will head on the road for their quarterfinal match up. The winner of Sporting KC and Orlando will meet the winner of the Chicago Fire vs Columbus Crew on June 26th.
There's been a big debate since Tuesday night after both Sporting Kansas City and affiliate club, Orlando City, won their US Open Cup matches setting up a fourth round match up where the two would play each other. The debate was whether Orlando City's top scorer and KC's 2012 first round draft pick Dom Dwyer, and KC's 3 other loaned players (Christian Duke, Jon Kempin, and Yann Songo'o) would be able to play in the game.

The New York Red Bulls battled in their first game of the centennial U.S. Open Cup against a mix of college students and amateur players from Reading United AC. The visitors were granted the chance to play against the Red Bulls after defeating USL PRO side Harrisburg City Islanders 1-0 in the second round last week.
The Reading United players could hold their heads high after some resolute defending and sensational goalkeeping held New York scoreless for more than 60 minutes.
Last night in Cleveland, the United States National Team was outclassed by a Belgium squad that exposed the American side's weaknesses, weaknesses that many US fans and Soccer House have conveniently turned a blind eye towards since the team's success in the 2002 World Cup finals.
While the USMNT has made great strides since its days of wandering the non-World Cup finals wilderness between 1950 and 1990, the team, and the USSF program in general, have much work to do.
