While few could've predicted how it would happen, it would be hard for anyone to be surprised by
what the San Jose Earthquakes pulled off Saturday night.
In what has become the latest in a series of astonishing late heroics by San Jose, Steven
Lenhart scored a 93rd-minute winner to stun the Seattle Sounders and earn the Earthquakes a 2-1
victory at Buck Shaw Stadium.
For more than 90 minutes on Saturday night, Sean Johnson was a wall the San jose Earthquakes
simply couldn't get past. The Chicago Fire goalkeeper was enjoying a dream game and looked like he
was on his way to another shutout win.
An inordinate amount of stoppage time, and San Jose's penchant for late goals spoiled the night
for Johnson and the Fire.
With the All-Star break on the horizon, conversations tend to steer towards who the best players in
MLS are and who deserves the call up. However, now the those questions lend themselves to the
follow up of which team in the league deserves the title of "best".
A thirty-yard, outside-of-the-foot curler that beat Mexican keeper Memo Ochoa upper 90 was
followed by a howling celebration and a playful smile as teammates lauded the strike with a chorus
of ooh's and ahh's. His movement was spry, his passes precise.
By Tony Edwards - San Jose, CA (May 15, 2012) US Soccer Players -- In Tuesday's column, Tony looks
at San Jose's tactical choices, the hottest teams in Major League Soccer, and asks what's with
Houston playing on a Tuesday night. Is it already a little bit of a case of the bloom off the rose
in San Jose?
In a single match, Rafa Marquez showed why he can simultaneously be a frustrating yet invaluable
part of the New York Red Bulls.
Sunday's 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Union marked his first match back since April 14th,
when his tackle on San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Shea Salinas earned him a three-game
suspension.
If the San Jose Earthquakes used March to let MLS competition know that they were an improved
side, they used April to let their foes know that they are a legitimate contender.
San Jose was able to go through the month unscathed, snapping the Vancouver Whitecaps' record
shutout streak to start a season in a 3-1 win; twice coming back from deficits to draw the New
York Red Bulls 2-2 even after losing centerback Victor Bernardez and winger Shea Salinas to
injury; defeating Real Salt Lake 3-1 and winning 2-1 in Philadelphia en route to first place in
the Western Conference and SBI's MLS Team of the Month honors.
With a road game in Seattle followed by the first of three grudge matches against the Red Bulls,
Saturday's home game against the depleted West Conference leading San Jose Earthquakes should have
been a chance for the Union to jump on their weakened guests and claim their third consecutive
victory.

That was Rafa Marquez fouling Shea Salinas over the weekend. Today the MLS Disciplinary Committee
suspended Rafa Marquez for 3 games. As I discussed a couple of times last year, the one thing you
can be sure of is that the Disciplinary Committee will be inconsistent and this is another example
of it.
It's been five days since the devastating injury to Shea Salinas at Red Bull Arena, and finally
Major League Soccer's disciplinary committee has come down with a decision on Rafa Marquez. The
Mexican international has been served a three match ...

Major League Soccer's Disciplinary Committee announced the retroactive punishments from last
Saturday's New York - San Jose game. New York's Rafa Marquez has been suspended for three games and
fined for dragging down and kicking San Jose's Shea Salinas and San Jose's Marvin Chavez has been
suspended for one game and fined for a tackle from behind that was missed by the officiating crew.
New York Red Bulls midfielder Rafa Marquez always figured to face some sort of suspension for
his actions in last weekend's match against the San Jose Earthquakes. On Thursday, Marquez and the
Red Bulls found out just how stiff a punishment he will face.
MLS announced on Thursday that Marquez will be suspended for three matches after injuring San
Jose midfielder Shea Salinas with a bearhug and slam that resulted in Salinas suffering a broken
collarbone.
A part of me is shocked Marquez is still in the league. Rick Carlisle agrees somewhat. MLS breaks
down the biggest decisions of Week 6, and Marquez's shameful body tackle on Shea Salinas, which
left the latter with a broken collarbone, leads the lot. What a toolshed. - Will Parchman
By Jason Davis - WASHINGTON, DC (Apr 18, 2011) US Soccer Players -- On Saturday, Rafa Marquez made
the balance of a soccer game all but irrelevant. When the New York Red Bulls defender blatantly
bear-hugged San Jose's Shea Salinas, rode the Quakes midfielder to the ground, and then kicked
Salinas, that moment late in the first-half made it hard for people to talk about anything else.
After Rafa Marquez' latest act of misconduct, the consensus question seems to be not if MLS'
Disciplinary Committee will suspend the New York Red Bulls Designated Player, but how for long?
Marquez' much-publicized, off-ball, NFL-style tackle and kick to San Jose Earthquakes winger
Shea Salinas resulted in Salinas breaking his clavicle, and he is set to undergo surgery and miss
the next 6-to-8 weeks, according to the Earthquakes.
Saturday night's match between the New York Red Bulls and the San Jose Earthquakes was a chippy
affair, with plenty of questionable plays. None more questionable than Rafa Marquez's football
tackle of Shea Salinas.
With the Red Bulls defending a corner kick situation, Marquez wrapped his arms around Salinas in
the box, refusing to let go of his marker.
Just before halftime in the New York Red Bulls' 2-2 draw against San Jose on Saturday night, New
York's Rafa Marquez made his time in MLS even more disappointing than it already was. While
defending a corner kick, Marquez decided to wrap his arms around San Jose's Shea Salinas and run
him into the ground shoulder first.
The New York Red Bulls are quickly building a reputation as one of the most schizophrenic sides
in Major League Soccer. The team squandered two early leads at home, getting victimized by a pair
of brilliant San Jose goals en route to a deflating 2-2 draw.
Real Salt Lake and San Jose, 1 and 2 in the West respectively, met in San Jose last night to
duke it out for top spot in the West. Coming into the match the Quakes had been unbeaten in 4 games
and Real Salt Lake had won 5 of 7. The previous 2 meetings between these two teams in San Jose went
Real Salt's way, with a 3-0 drumming in 2010 and a rain soaked 1-0 win in 2011.
My power rankings for the week. No-brainers for the first and last spots, everything else around
the league is up for grabs.
1. Sporting KC. Six of six. Unstoppable. Have to be considered favorites to run away with
Supporters' Shield.
2. San Jose. Responded to New York, twice. Salinas injury could be tough to overcome.

There's been much debate over the MLS Disciplinary Committee's usage of video to go back and slap
players with fines and suspensions.
Now, it's possible that many of these same critics will not only praise this system but will be
glad it's in place.
Rafael Marquez got away with a horrible act of violence in New York's 2-2 draw with San Jose on
Saturday.

Remember when I said this week was gonna be hectic? Well here's your proof. It's a few hours from
game day and I'm just not putting up my preview interview form earlier this week. This also means
that tonight we'll use an abbreviated match thread.
In any case, I was lucky enough to interview Robert Jonas of fellow SB Nation blog: Quake,
Rattle and Goal to help us figure out exactly who this San Jose side is, and why they're so damn
good right now.
