Looks like Samir Nasri is showing his true colours again. After that one England performance, he
seems to have reverted to his usual "I am in it for myself" routine.
He's getting plenty of censure from his team mates for being peripheral to the Sweden game which
resulted in an embarrassing loss and setting themselves on a collision course with defending Euro
and World Cup champions, Spain.
In 1996, after France narrowly defeating Bulgaria to move on from the group stages of the
European Cup competition, the French defender Marcel Desailly made a striking accusation during a
press conference. Hristo Stoichkov, the star Bulgarian striker, had racially abused him during the
game. "Hey Desailly, do you know that little kids are dying of hunger in your country," Desailly
claimed Stoichkov had said to him on the pitch during one of a number of heated entanglements.
The big news is that Chile announced it's squad for the January 22nd friendly against the USA in
Los Angeles. The Chilean football federation has elections January 7th, so this could be the last
squad coach Marcelo Bielsa announces (before he becomes Liverpool's manager).
ESPN's Outside The Lines tackles serious topics that can't be captured in soundbytes or solved
through the pseudophilosophical meanderings of group punditry.
Manchester United defender Patrice Evra is relieved to put his South African summer of discontent
behind and concentrate on the imminent Premier League season ahead. The 29 year old is one of

Zero wins, one goal, one player sent home, an open revolt, and a lame duck coach – that's the
World Cup in a nutshell for the French National Team.
It was a sorry performance that left an entire country outraged a country that was on the brink
of winning the same competition just four years earlier.
French legend Lilian Thuram has insisted that current captain Patrice
Evra must never play for France again, as punishment for his role in the national team's
implosion in South Africa.
Evra was a central figure in the player's revolt that followed Nicolas Anelka's
expulsion from the squad, and Thuram believes that the Manchester United man is yet to be
sufficiently punished for his actions;
"I demanded that the players be harshly punished and that Evra never returns to the
France squad.
Former French national team defender Lilian Thuram has launched an astonishing tirade at French
World Cup captain Patrice Evra, claiming that the Manchester United left back should be barred from
ever appearing for France again.
Evra was at the forefront of the French player revolt during this summer's showcase that
ultimately saw Les Blues crash out in the group stage.

I was in Paris this week, and got to catch up with Lilian Thuram, who we hosted here at Duke
last fall. He invited me to attend a PSG match with him at the Parc des Princes, and I of course
jumped at the opportunity. The police have been heavily cracking down on some fan organizations at
PSG, but they seemed spirited as ever, with the Boulogne Kop on one end, and Auteuil and the Paname
United Colors on the other.
As we all look forward to this year's World Cup there is a natural tendency to glance backwards at
the same time to admire the history of the tournament. With the exception of the final itself, the
semis are amongst the most eagerly awaited matches. Let's look at some classic World Cup
semi-finals and see if we can choose the best.
With the 2010 FIFA World Cup just a few weeks away, its time to breakdown the 32 teams that will be
participating in The Great Tournament. Next up is the European nation of France.
Bob Bradley's Egypt got off to a great start as they won their first World Cup qualifier today, 2-0
over Mozambique in an empty stadium in Alexandria.

Here is video from the USA National Soccer Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony that took place this
week - featuring Tony Meola, Desmond Armstrong and Tony DiCicco.
Joe Jordan pulled out the oldest trick in the playbook winding up Gennaro Gattuso. He might have
indeed called the Milan midfielder '"f****** Italian b******'".
But Gattuso defending his actions as a response to racism borders on the comical.

On May 5th, 2002, most Inter fans were doing the same exact thing Ronaldo is doing in the
picture. Inter had thought that they had finally gotten it right. They would finally win their
first Scudetto since 1989. But it wasn't to be, and May 5th, 2002 is a day Inter fans do not like
to remember.
Leading figures in French football - including national team coach Laurent Blanc - have been
accused of trying to implement racial quotas for non-white players in youth academies.
Lilian Thuram is France's most capped player with 142 appearances under his belt. Originally from
Guadalupe, Thuram now campaigns against discrimination in football.
Check out this interview with Lilian Thuram, conducted by Pierce Freelon via Blackademics. I
stumbled onto this exploring the website generated by Professor Lauren Dubois's course on World Cup
politics. Amazingly, Thurham was in residence at Duke as a part of this course.
It's the final home game of the regular season and the New England Revolution have had the
better of the play for the first half hour of the match. Chris Tierney sends a lofty cross
forward that Shalrie Joseph runs onto, heads past the keeper, and slots into an open net to give
the Revolution a 1-0 lead.
For this week's Compilation Friday we've got a lesson in recent history with France's all-time
leader in caps, Lilian Thuram (142). In this video featuring his glory days with Juve, you'll see
his mastery of the body check a move that can be just as devastating as a good slide tackle, but
without the grass stains.
France goalkeeper Fabien Barthez leaps over Brazil striker Ronaldo, as France's Lilian Thuram
looks on, during the 1998 World Cup final in Paris. France won 3-0 to lift its first ever World
Cup, thanks to goals by the great Zinedine Zidane (2) and former Arsenal star Emmanuel Petit.
During a recent African Legends match, Nigeria's best known talent showed some of his old
magical flourishes reminiscent of his Bolton days. He twisted and turned, sprayed trademark precise
matches, tracked back to help the defense and played with an alacrity that belied his 35 years of
age.
grandissima stella in circolazione.
It's true, there are a lot of Brentons in Swansea. Third most dense concentration of Brentons in
the UK after southwest England (Plymouth) and Southampton. Fascinating stuff, this.
Read Martin's preview because you should and because he paints a bleak picture of our backline,
a picture we all need to come to terms with.
The Sides of the 1920s, the End of the Club's First Golden Age
The 1920s were times of self-discovery for Barcelona. It was by that time the club started to
recognize its symbolic meaning to the Catalan people.
It was at the time the club began to become more than a club. Jack Greenwell, the then manager,
was the one who laid the foundation for success on the field.
Her's FIFA's Golden Ball nominees list for this World Cup's best player award, selected by

and immigration as well as discussing the work of his new foundation.
Liverpool have wrapped up their signing of Glen Johnson from Portsmouth. The lingering doubt,
though, is how much of a role can arguably Britain's finest full-back play in transforming
Liverpool into Premiership champions.
On last season's form, Johnson is certainly England's best full-back.
