When FC Dallas faces Toronto FC at BMO Field this weekend, they will see several familiar faces. Of course, one of those is defender Jeremy Hall, who spent a short time with FCD in 2011 after coming over in a trade with Portland. But the other is forward Andrew Wiedeman, who headed to the Reds in the Julian de Guzman trade last summer.
Even after the sale of Brek Shea to Stoke City of the English Premier League earlier this month became official, one thing FC Dallas did not do was further look into bringing back former starting holding midfielder Julian de Guzman, who is now playing in Germany's second division.

On Thursday afternoon, FC Dallas technical director Fernando Clavijo confirmed that the club and holding midfielder Julian de Guzman are no closer to agreeing to terms for the 2013 season. And with preseason training set to commence in less than two weeks, it looks like the talented Canadian won't be in the mix for 2013.
With the announcement that FC Dallas had signed 33-year-old defensive midfielder Peter Luccin earlier this week, many took that addition to mean that Julian de Guzman would not be returning for 2013. Of course, the door isn't completely shut for the Canadian international to return next year but a lot would have to happen for that to occur.
With Monday's announcement that FC Dallas had signed Peter Luccin to be its starting holding midfielder in 2013, it looks like the chance of Julian de Guzman, who was absolutely stellar after coming over in summer trade with Toronto FC, returning to the club have dwindled to almost nothing.

FC Dallas has signed former Atlético Madridmidfielder Peter Luccin, pending receipt of his P-1 visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC). Per team and MLS policy, the terms of the deal will not be disclosed.

Maybe it was after the final whistle had sounded and the curtain had officially fallen on the 2012 FC Dallas season but then again, maybe it was weeks before when some of us called this team's playoff chances DOA, but once the '12 campaign was officially in the books, it was time to figure out what the biggest questions facing FCD were heading into what promised to be a short yet eventful off-season.
As the hours and days pass, it is becoming more and more evident that Julian de Guzman will not be playing for FC Dallas in 2013 and beyond. Basing this on quotes from both FCD technical director Fernando Clavijo as well as from Dallas coach Schellas Hyndman, it just appears the two sides are far enough apart when it comes to money along with the family considerations also coming heavily into play that it is very unlikely that JDG is back for more with the club he admits he rediscovered his love for the game.
From the time he came over in a summer trade with Toronto FC until the end of the regular season, Julian de Guzman was a great story for FC Dallas at defensive mid. A guy who had lost his love for the beautiful game with the Reds, he rediscovered that affinity for football in Frisco and admitted he'd like to return for 2013 provided the financial compensation is there.
Two of the biggest questions facing FC Dallas this off-season dealt with whether or not the club would re-sign defensive midfielder Julian de Guzman and center back George John. Well, there really isn't much to report on either front right now, something FCD technical director Fernando Clavijo reiterated this week.
Welcome ladies and gentlemen to the Fifteenth Annual 3rd Degree Awards. The 3rd Degree Awards were created in 1998, with the addition of the Spark award in 1999, and the Ember Award in 2006. The "Thirds" consist of two major categories, FC Dallas awards and League Wide awards, and are based on regular season play.
One of the biggest questions facing FC Dallas this off-season is whether or not the club will be able to re-sign holding midfielder Julian de Guzman, who solidified Dallas in the middle of the yard after coming over in a summer trade with Toronto FC. The Canadian international was making DP-level money with the Reds and it's a no brainer that FCD won't be able to match such a financial commitment to the talented midfielder.
The very frustrating and painful 2012 FC Dallas season is now behind us, but what's in store for the offseason could hold its own set of hair-pulling realities.

While the ending to the 2012 season didn't turn out quite like many who support FC Dallas had hoped it would, with FCD making the playoffs for a third straight year, one big highlight of the season was the strong support the club received. The final tally saw Dallas draw more fans than every year in franchise history except for 1996, the club's inaugural season.
Other than the signing of Blas Perez, who ended up leading the club with nine goals despite missing 12 games due to injury, there wasn't a better personnel move made by FC Dallas this season than the acquisition of holding mid Julian de Guzman from Toronto FC on July 13 in exchange for Andrew Wiedeman.
"I think we were lucky to get a point. We had opportunities to put them away. And I think part of the Achilles' heel for Chivas is when they give up goals. When they give up a goal, they seem to give up more. For us, we just didn't have it today. I don't know if it's the long season, if it's the pressure, if it's the stress.
With five games remaining and FC Dallas' playoff hopes remaining just a flicker, it's more than
likely time to start addressing which players have expiring contracts and which don't for FCD. This
is by no means an exhaustive list as this piece was mainly done to show which contracts were
expiring.
Playing a few days after a trip to Trinidad in 100-degree heat without being entirely at full
strength is not exactly a recipe for success. No, this was not a standout performance from the
Seattle Sounders, but it was the result they needed. A 1-1 tie against FC Dallas keeps the Sounders
in good position to get a Top 3 seed in the Western Conference and sets them up nicely for the
stretch run.
FC Dallas forward Blas Perez, defender Carlos Rodriguez and midfielder Julian de Guzman have
each been called in to represent their countries in upcoming World Cup Qualifying matches. The trio

Schellas Hyndman is never one to mince words. That's why when he was asked how his current
arrangement of alternating between Julian de Guzman and former captain Daniel Hernandez at the
defensive midfield spot had been going, he offered a frank assessment of them both as he usually
does.

The talent in the MLS Re-Entry Draft has been diluted a bit since the initial list of players was released. Players have either been traded to new teams or re-signed with their current clubs, leaving fewer options for MLS teams to choose from.

Every season I always made bold predictions and in those predictions I always have one that is pretty common from season to season. I always claim that a trade will reshape a season or at least allow one or two teams to get ahead.
Darren O'Dea signs for Toronto FC. I take a look at his signing plus explain why I think it was how
Julian De Guzman left Toronto that meant that it was O'Dea and not Olaf Mellberg that joined the
Reds...not that this was necessarily a bad thing.

Even before FC Dallas' 2012 season officially came to a merciful end with a 2-2 draw against Chivas USA on Oct. 28, anyone who followed the team at all this season and for the last several years for that matter knew what the top priority would be this off-season: adding a striker to give FCD some much-needed depth up top.

"It's definitely one of the biggest highlights of my career. It'll mean a lot more once we clinch that playoff spot. The objective this game was to get three points. We knew how important this was and we fought. We battled. We suffered and in the end we came out with what we deserved. Anyone would dream of scoring a goal like that and it's not every day I find myself scoring goals so I was very grateful to be in the right spot at the right time.
Such a fun quote after last night's FC Dallas-Vancouver game from Julian de Guzman. Sometimes karma is a funny character and it seems like de Guzman is finally getting to laugh at it all.

Toronto FC started the season with three Designated Players. None of the three will finish the

The late, great Jerry Garcia might have said it best when in one Grateful Dead classic, the legendary Captain Trips said what a long, strange trip it's been. Well, with just over a month having passed since FC Dallas rode off into the off-season with a 2-2 draw against Chivas USA on Oct. 28, much has happened.
